Zhejiang FC goalkeeper Dong Chunyu has carved out a unique niche on social media. While many players share leisure activities, his account is filled with study notes and book reflections, earning him the nickname “Political Commissar” from fans.
“I’m naturally someone who enjoys learning. In my free time, I rarely go out for fun. I also like helping others by sharing what I’ve learned. It gives me a great sense of achievement if my insights are useful to them,” Dong said in a recent interview.
His online shop features just three items—all books. Among them, “Selected Works of Mao Zedong” has quietly sold over 50 copies, a statistic he takes pride in. One of his video series, where he reads and interprets the classic work, connects historical wisdom to modern life.
Dong also highlighted the role of veteran players in Zhejiang FC’s squad. “We have experienced players across all lines—Gao Di up front, Zhang Jiaqi in midfield. Even though Zhang doesn’t play much, he ran over 12,000 meters in the match against Yunnan Yukun,” he noted, crediting the team’s unity and selflessness for their cohesion.
At the end of the interview, Dong mentioned his current read: “The Inevitable” by Kevin Kelly. “This era is developing very fast. The book looks ahead more than 20 years, discussing how AI and robots might help humanity. It’s a way to prepare for the future,” he explained.
