The Valerón brothers were once again clad in yellow this Sunday at Cercados de Espino. They took to the pitch with the veterans’ team of UD Las Palmas in a friendly match that served as the centerpiece of the reopening of the Maestro Antonio Sports Complex field, following its comprehensive renovation.
The occasion presented a nostalgic image: the Valeróns posing again in the yellow jersey on the very grounds where they grew up and honed their skills before stepping into professional football. It was a special memory for the neighborhood and for the fans who gathered to enjoy a day marked by sports, community spirit, and football history.
**A Friendly Match with a Yellow Flavor**
The match pitted the Cercados de Espino Veterans Selection against the UD Las Palmas Former Players Association, creating a vibrant morning that brought together neighbors, families, and fans. The game was part of the activities organized by the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council to inaugurate the renovated sports facility. The presence of former yellow-shirted players turned the day into a unique celebration, with UD Las Palmas taking center stage.
The reopening ceremony of the Maestro Antonio Sports Complex was attended by the mayor of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Marco Aurelio Pérez Sánchez; the Councillor for Education and Sports of the Canary Islands Government, Hipólito Suárez Nuez; and the Sports Councillor, Ramón Suárez. The event had a festive and sporting atmosphere, with a program designed to bring the community together around the renewed facilities, which have been adapted to meet the needs of the neighborhood.
**Nearly €500,000 Investment**
The renovation of the complex, funded by the Canary Islands Government’s Ministry of Education and Sports, involved an investment of nearly €500,000. The goal was to modernize the facilities and provide a safer, more accessible, and functional space for users, athletes, and residents. Key upgrades include a complete renewal of the artificial turf on the football field, replacement of the irrigation system, installation of new sports equipment, and improvements to the surrounding area.
Work also included upgrades to the changing rooms and adjacent areas, covering plumbing, electrical systems, waterproofing, carpentry, painting, and accessibility enhancements. Additionally, the project involved rehabilitating the adjacent multi-sport court, improving perimeter fencing, and constructing a new access ramp. With this initiative, the city council reinforces its commitment to modern sports infrastructure and the promotion of sports as a community gathering point.
The reopening of the Cercados de Espino field thus became a memorable day, featuring the return of the Valeróns in yellow and UD Las Palmas as the common thread of a celebration that united sport, identity, and emotion.
