Following the Lakers’ 0-4 sweep by the Thunder in the NBA playoffs on May 12, LeBron James addressed the media about his future and the team’s season.
“It felt like we went through several distinct phases this season. But no matter whether it was me, Luka Dončić, or Austin Reaves dealing with injuries, I believe this team showed tremendous resilience. Winning the first round series really showcased our ability to withstand pressure and fight through adversity,” James said.
When asked if this season’s end felt different from previous years, James responded with a touch of humor: “Once you pass 40, you start to forget a lot of the small details from the past.”
Reflecting on his goal of restoring the Lakers’ glory, James stated: “Winning the championship in 2020 was our peak moment. That’s exactly why I came to the Lakers in the first place. I wanted to return to championship-level performance and bring this storied franchise back to its former greatness.”
On what continues to drive him: “I don’t have anything left to prove in this league. I’ve achieved everything and experienced it all. As long as I can still compete and chase another championship, that’s what keeps me going. It’s always been that way.”
James also discussed his unique role this season: “I’ve never been the third offensive option in my career. Being able to take on that role for a while and still play at a high level, then transition back to my usual position—it felt really cool.”
As for his decision on next season, James remained uncertain: “Honestly, I have no idea right now. We just lost the game, emotions are still raw, and I’m not sure what my next step will be. I plan to return to family life first, have serious conversations with my wife and kids, spend quality time with them. When the time is right and everything settles down, I’ll make my decision public.”
James emphasized that his final choice will be based on whether he truly enjoys the entire process, not just the outcome of winning. He also revealed that he will discuss this important decision with his wife, daughter, and younger son.
