Following the Los Angeles Lakers’ series loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on May 12, LeBron James addressed retirement speculation during a press conference. “Those are all media talking points,” James stated firmly. “I have never voluntarily said I am retiring.”
James made it clear he is not stepping away from the game anytime soon. When asked about his future, he noted that he will discuss it with his family, and when the time comes for a decision, everyone will know.
According to The Athletic, both the Lakers organization and James are interested in continuing their partnership. However, the Golden State Warriors have been actively recruiting him, and the Cleveland Cavaliers are also among the teams pursuing the four-time MVP.
Despite the interest, a return to Cleveland appears unlikely. James has previously joked about not wanting to play there, and only a supermax contract could change that. As for the Warriors, while they have long coveted James, sources indicate he is their third option behind younger stars like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Kawhi Leonard, meaning Golden State may not go all out.
The most probable outcome is James staying in Los Angeles. He owns a home there, his family is settled, and his son Bronny has shown promise in his second NBA season, nearing rotation-level minutes. Leaving could jeopardize Bronny’s spot with the Lakers. If James agrees to a pay cut, the Lakers would likely extend his contract quickly, making it a win-win situation for both sides.
