Russian tennis player Ekaterina Alexandrova failed to advance to the third round of the WTA 1000 tournament in Rome, falling to 38-year-old German Laura Siegemund in a three-set battle. The 31-year-old Russian, seeded 14th and ranked 46th in the world, lost 4:6, 7:6 (7:4), 1:6.
As a seeded player, Alexandrova received a first-round bye and began her campaign directly in the second round. Siegemund’s next opponent will be either Czech Karolina Pliskova or Romanian Jaqueline Cristian.
Alexandrova currently sits at 14th in the WTA rankings, making her the second-highest ranked Russian. She has five WTA titles to her name. The Rome tournament, with a prize pool of €7.22 million, is a WTA 1000 event, the most prestigious category after Grand Slams and the WTA Finals. The event is scheduled to conclude on May 16.
