The San Francisco Giants have activated left-handed pitcher Sam Hentges from the injured list, marking his long-awaited return after nearly 22 months away from the game due to various injuries. The move was made official on Sunday.

In corresponding roster moves, the Giants recalled right-hander Dylan Smith from Triple-A Sacramento and optioned right-handers Ryan Walker and Gregory Santos to the same affiliate.

Hentges, 29, last appeared in a major league game on July 10, 2024, while with the Cleveland Guardians. He was initially sidelined with a left shoulder injury, and after two months of rehabilitation, underwent surgery to repair his labrum and shoulder capsule. The recovery sidelined him for the entire 2025 season, and he also required knee surgery in August of that year. Hentges signed with the Giants in December and has been working his way back ever since, with his return extending into the current regular season.
Over his career, all with the Guardians from 2021 onward, Hentges has compiled a 7-8 record with a 4.18 ERA in 168 appearances, including 12 starts.
Both Hentges and Smith are set to make their Giants debuts. Smith, 25, has seven major league games of experience, all with the Detroit Tigers last season. In nine relief outings for Sacramento this year, he posted a 2.13 ERA without a decision.
Walker, 30, struggled to a 0-1 record with three saves in six opportunities and a 6.46 ERA across 16 relief appearances this season. Santos, 26, recorded a 3.60 ERA in three relief outings.
