On May 11, Xu Genbao, along with his disciples including Wu Lei, hosted a 93rd birthday celebration in Beijing for football legend Nian Weisi. Wu Lei delivered a speech on behalf of the players, extending birthday wishes to Nian.
In his address, Wu Lei said: “Respected Elder Nian, Coach Xu, and all the predecessors, good evening! It’s a great joy to gather here today to celebrate Elder Nian’s 93rd birthday. On behalf of all the players, I wish you a happy birthday, good health, and eternal happiness!
“Coach Xu has always told us since we were young that Elder Nian is a true pioneer of Chinese football, having dedicated almost his entire life to the sport. Growing up at the Genbao Base, we witnessed the same spirit in Coach Xu—an unwavering commitment to football.
“Coach Xu also taught us that to play football well, one must first be a good person, always carrying a grateful heart. As our generation of players grows older, some are nearing retirement while others are stepping into coaching roles. We strive to set a positive example through our actions and words for the younger players, passing on the values and spirit instilled in us by Elder Nian and Coach Xu, so that this legacy continues from one generation to the next.
“I truly admire how Elder Nian and Coach Xu can gather like this every year, sharing stories and memories at such an age. For me personally, this is something I deeply envy. Once again, I wish Elder Nian good health and a long life!”
